Remembering Éva Balogh (1936 – 2021)

Éva S. Balogh, the singularly dedicated editor and main contributor of Hungarian Spectrum died on November 30th of cardiac arrest. For over a decade, she dedicated her life to reporting on and analysing politics, culture and society in Hungary for English-speaking readers, diplomats and civil servants throughout Europe and North America, and for many democratically-minded Hungarians too, especially in the Diaspora.

Éva left Hungary in December 1956, arriving in Canada the following February. She obtained a B.A. in History from Carleton University in Ottawa, followed by an M.A. and PhD from Yale University, where she later taught Eastern European history.

She established the award-winning Hungarian Spectrum in 2007 and worked without rest on providing daily, quality news articles and analysis — the vast majority of which were written by her.

Éva’s unexpected death is a jarring reminder of the brittleness of human life. Her memory will live through her thousands of articles on her country of birth.

May Éva experience the fullness of peace.
