Viral: Antisemitism in Four Mutations is a new documentary film just released in theatres in the US. The film includes segments focusing on the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre, anti-Semitism in the UK Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn, anti-Semitic attacks in France and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s institutionalized anti-Semitic propaganda.
The film director Andrew Goldberg says that anti-Semitism is on the rise because of populist politicians and a polarized political environment that is amplified by social media. “I see today’s society becoming more fractured and angrier,” he said. The film features US President Bill Clinton, Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt, conservative columnist George Will and many others.
There is nothing new about Viktor Orbán’s cynical antisemitism. Orbán frequently declares “zero tolerance” in English and continues his appalling racist and antisemitic policies in Hungarian. It is revolting that leaders of his Fidesz party often speak highly of pro-Hitler Hungarian politicians and personalities of the last century.
Beyond the regime’s sick obsession with Holocaust survivor US financier George Soros, Hungary officially celebrates many WWII-era Hungarian fascists. “My time as US Ambassador to Hungary was a four-year window into some of the darkest corners of anti-Semitism.” – wrote Eleni Kounalakis currently Lieutenant Governor of California.
Just recently the government named a prominent anti-Semite Ms. Beatrix Siklósi to head the most widely listened public radio, Kossuth Radio. In an open letter, Jewish organizations protested the appointment accusing her of spreading anti-Semitic views on social media. The Government calls the accusations are “baseless.”
Orbán’s new school curriculum dumped Hungary’s only Nobel Laureate writer, Holocaust survivor Imre Kertész. At the same time, openly anti-Semitic authors of the last century, like Albert Wass or József Nyírő are part of the curriculum. Wass was an American citizen and his works are popular among US neo-Nazis. His anti-Semitic pamphlets appear in the US neo-Nazi website StormFront. Hungarian teachers have vigorously protested against teaching the fascist writers.

Budapest is also exporting the country’s intolerance to the US and Canada. Handpicked North American Orbán loyalists formed the so called „Diaspora Council” and its members sign a declaration in support of far-right policies. Canadian diaspora leader, Ms. Anna Szenthe and US leader, Ms. Andrea Lauer-Rice signed a petition in support of two ethnic Hungarian far-right Romanian activists, Mr. István Beke and Mr. Zoltán Szőcs, both members of the neo-Nazi Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement (Hatvannégy Vármegye).
Just to give a taste of the Hungarian style antisemitism. Recently high quality print posters appeared on the streets of Budapest with the photo of disgraced US film producer Harvey Weinstein. The poster’s text refers to Weinstein’s “fat Jewish” private part.

Verbal antisemitism is institutionalized in the media. Budapest has approximately 100,000 citizens with Jewish roots. Fortunately physical violence is rare; still it is disturbing how Orbán’s racist intolerance is also gaining popularity among recently arrived Hungarian immigrants in North America. Several Hungarian-speaking US and Canadian organizations are importing these dark ideas from Budapest.

Viktor Orban has been a great leader not only for the Hungarian people but also for Europe. You do realize that Orban has visited Israel on many occasions as the guest of Prime Minister Netanyahu, right? Also, you failed to mention that Soros is despised in Israel as well as Hungary, right? Than you go on to say the former US Ambassador to Hungary and current Lieutenant Governor of California mentions darkest corners of anti semitism…..California where the government doesnt care about their citizens in the least. At the end of the war Stalin pursued a policy of disruption in the Middle East – whose oil had been central to the Western war effort in both world wars.
Stalin’s great idea was to push aggressively for the establishment of the state of Israel, but he faced opposition from the British, whose approach to Palestine (then under British rule) was to increase the Jewish population very gradually. Even so, the mid-1930s saw an extremely violent Arab uprising caused by Jewish immigration.
In 1945-48 Stalin knew that his big problems with his pro-Israel policy would be a lack of numbers and the British blockade on clandestine immigrants to Palestine. The boarding of the SS Exodus was an example that the British meant business withthe blockade. In late 1944 Jewish partisan fighters gathered in Chelm, near Lublin (eastern Poland) and were assigned new roles. Some were assigned to repression activities in Poland, others were assigned to Jewish emigration and organization of Jewish fighting units in Palestine. People like Abba Kovner.
The emigration started off promisingly, with Commuist partisans like Kovner guiding large numbers of Jews south to join up with people smugglers shipping Jews to Palestine without papers. There was no problem passing through Red-controlled areas with these guides. Then in 1946 the stream of Jewish emigrants strated drying up. Stalin then launched a series of coordinated killings of Jews across Soviet-occupied Eastern Europe. In all, 700,000 Jews left or were pushed out of Eastern Europe.
The worst Communist atrocity against the Jews was in Kielce, Poland (40 dead) – and it is with this “pogrom” that Stalin’s plan becomes clear to historians. Too many Poles knew about it for it to remain secret. In 1990 one retired secret police officer (Anatol Fejgin, Jewish) talked openly about it. The “blood libel victim” talked about it in 1990, as did other people involved. The daughter of General Berling confronted high-ranking officers about it at a social gathering at her father’s house shortly afterwards – they told her to be quiet as it was a state secret.
Other “pogroms” in Czechoslovakia and Hungary took place – sharing common features, close together in timing and all blamed on anti-Communist fighters, but none as well-documented as Kielce. Topolcany (Cz.) and Miskolc (Hun.) were other notable secret police operations. There was even an abortive pogrom, launched in Rzeszow by the Stalinist secret police – and stoppped because of political developments elsewhere in Poland.
Stationed in Rzeszow at the time was secret police officer Elzbieta Poznanska, one of around 16 officers and therefore almost definitely involved. Her son Konstanty Gebert writes repeatedly about Polish guilt about the Kielce pogrom and Polish anti-Semitism!! He was at the recent Yad Vashem international conference. Talk about a guilty conscience. To make matters worse, the senior ranks in the Stalinist secret police (in Poland at least) were heavily Jewish, like Ms Poznanska (and the late Shmuel Krakowski, chief archivist at Yad Vashem).
The leading comrade of Mr Gebert (father Boleslaw, founder of the US Communist party) at the highly influential newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza is a certain Adam Michnik. He played a central role in promoting the Sachs transformation plan (called the Balcerowicz Plan) in 1989, which blocked property restitution for Jewish property heirs. Most of the property has since gone to old Commie Establishment figures. Incidentally, Michnik’s brother Stefan was a Stalinist hanging judge (he liked to help hang his victims too) and is currently holed up in Sweden. Asylum on fears of racial persecution in Poland.
None of this can be talked about by historians, as it’s political dynamite that strikes at the heart of Israel’s founding myth and at dark places in postwar Eastern European history, when after the expulsions almost all Jews in Poland were Party members (according to Jaff Schatz) and most were employees of central government agencies during the worst Stalinist repression. Like Michnik’s parents and Gebert’s parents. The people who keep the West informed about Polish politics.
My Jewish relations left Poland for Israel after the Kielce massacre. One had fought in the partisans under NKVD leadership.
