On November 3, 2020 presidential and congressional elections will be held in the United States. 82-year-old New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey has recently announced that she will not run for re-election. Among others, Evelyn Farkas has thrown her hat into that race. If elected she will be the only Hungarian-speaking member of Congress. The 17th Congressional district is traditionally “blue” with strong Democratic traditions and a large Hungarian American constituency.
Farkas is a 51-year-old Democrat who served in the Department of Defense during the Obama Administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia. A respected Russian expert she also advised then Senator Hillary Clinton.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College, she earned her Master’s and PhD from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Trustees of Franklin & Marshall College, her alma mater.
Her family is well known in the Hungarian-American community, Her father, Charles (Károly) Farkas who came to the US as a refugee after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, published a critically acclaimed memoir, Vanished by the Danube in 2013.
As a Russian expert, Evelyn Farkas was one of the first US politicians to raise an alarm about the cozy relationship between Trump and Putin. She demanded an investigation and “a security clearance on the president” voicing her suspicion that Trump was susceptible to blackmail from a foreign entity or individual.
György Lázár
Nobody blames Putin never and that is Orbán and Trump. That’s exactly these which accusing everyone and everything of failing. Isn’t that strange? Something’s the explanation.
If she is the one who helped advise on the Ukraine policy, leading up to the Maidan coup, then perhaps not such good news. The regime change hawks among the Democratic party made a huge mess in the world in the 2008-2016 period. From Lybia, Syria, Yemen and Ukraine, they left much death, devastation, refugees and misery everywhere, and they helped destabilize the entire ME-Europe region.
Good luck to her, and not because she has has been blessed with some Hungarian genes or possesses anti-Putin sentiments. Anyone is better than a member of the Republican gang that follows blindly the artificial blond bomber in the White House as he obliterates the values that made America great.
Putin, Orbán, Chairman Kim, or Cheee, (Kimchi?) are not the biggest threats to America. America is dying of its anti-intellectualism, its overwhelming obsession with being entertained rather than informed. They have finally gotten a President that’s giving it to them 24/7, with the assistance of CNN, FOX, and the entire media industry that’s driven by profit, rather than any sense of social responsibility (WHAT ????)
Please note: Americans are not dumb, the 93% of the Republicans who support Trump are not stupid or ignorant. They are simply ill informed and they have nothing but their profit driven, self-serving, political-economic system to thank for keeping them in the dark, and no longer able to distinguish illusion from reality.
It’s not Putin, who hijacked the 2016 Presidential elections, but Robert Mercer, Jarred Kushner, Steve Bannon, and the social media gurus, who invented the apps, and a new language of political persuasion that’s biased against the truth, hell bent on the manufacturing of artificial realities, and is in utter harmony with the needs of cyber-capitalism.
Ms Farkas would be well advised to refocus. Rather than blaming the Kremlin, she should look at Wall Street.
Ughhhhhhh…..
