Erzsébet and Zsuzsanna Ránki establish the György Ránki Scholarship at Indiana University

Erzsébet and Zsuzsanna Ránki have established the György Ránki Scholarship in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. This gift will provide financial support to scholars specializing in Hungarian Studies, as well as additional support for the György Ránki Hungarian Chair.

Professor György Ránki’s work focused on Hungarian and Central European economic history in the 19th and 20th centuries, foreign policy and economics, aspects of the Holocaust, and World War II history. He was the first holder of the Hungarian Chair in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies, which was established in 1979.

Quite interestingly the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University was founded as an Army Specialized Training Program for Central Eurasian languages in 1943. Later formally organized as the Department of Uralic and Altaic Studies. It was renamed the Department of Central Eurasian Studies in 1993 and today it is a recognized leader in the study of Central Eurasia.

“This gift from György’s daughter and late wife will provide the next generation of scholars financial support in the area of Hungarian Studies and additional support for the Ránki Chair. We could not think of a better way to honor György’s legacy at Indiana University.” said Jamsheed Choksy, Chair Department of Central Eurasian Studies.
