European Union sees considerable drop in asylum seekers

The number of asylum applications lodged in the European Union’s 28 member states declined by 10 percent in 2018. And the prior calendar year already showed a year-over-year drop of 44 percent. In 2018, the EU saw a total of 634 700 asylum applications, of which the largest country of origin was Syria (representing over 10% of all applications submitted). Within the context of first-instance decisions, 87% of Syrian asylum seekers were afforded international protection within the EU. The number of applications from nationals of Iran, Turkey and Pakistan were also significant (approximately 4% of all applications each), while the number fleeing Venezuela for a new life in Europe increased markedly to 22,000 applications, representing a twofold rise compared to 2017. Significant increases in the number of asylum seekers were registered among Palestinians (+61%), Georgians (+72%) and Colombians (+210%). In contrast, Europe is seeing a marked decline in the number of asylum seekers from African states, such as Gambia (-62%), Senegal (-46%) and Nigeria (-46%).

These statistics suggest that the number of asylum applications to the EU are now in line with figures prior to the migration crisis that erupted in 2015. In fact, the number of applications received in 2018 is slightly lower than the last pre-crisis figure from 2014.

Readers of HFP may be most interested in the number of refugees accepted by Hungary in 2018. Earlier in February, following an access to information request by the Népszava daily, we learned that Hungarian authorities accepted a total of 367 refugees in 2018. This represents a significant decrease from 2017, when Hungary accepted 1,300 asylum seekers. The majority of refugees who sought and received asylum in Hungary were nationals of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Good, the less comes the better, now we just need to send back those they brought in.

  2. If the EU were a little bit more sophisticated, they might realize, that for so few refugees it is not worth, delivering Orban for its “policy” feed. Then he would have to look for new old enemies …

  3. I believe that is about 20x more than Japan, with a population that is 12 x that of Hungary’s. In 2017 it accepted 20. Not all distinct native cultures around the world are as eager to commit ethno-cultural suicide as the Europeans, especially the West Europeans are so eager to do. Self-loathing is a cultural disease that mostly afflicts Western society.

We should note that EU actually has about 3 million, mostly non-Europeans settling in the EU every year. Asylum seekers are not the only migrant class. At this rate, EU will have a non-European majority population by the end of the century. Some countries are already approaching the point of no return.

    • Joe
Actually the arrivals are more than 4.2 million, but this is not “settling”; where did you get this from?
Loathing and hatred are gushing in Orbanistan, just as your own comments, the Magyar ugar “culture” is what should be expunged, ” as long as there are these “Christians and nemzeti” there will be no nemzet” as S. Màrai put it and now we witness the next brown wave destroying the nation.

  4. Some good news at last. Clearly Hungary’s border fences are working. Despite all the abuse directed toward the Orban government re: it’s migrant policy, I am certain that the average EU citizen living in Germany, etc. is very appreciative towards Hungary. This is a shining example of EU solidarity for both the present and the future.

    • „… I am certain that the average EU citizen living in Germany, etc. …“ If you think that Germans are so stupid … how much popularity does the AfD in Germany have … to be sure? 10%? … when you talk about the small hungarianfences that ends in nowhere …

Something which Fidesz supporters such as Martin, Joe and Mate appear to be unaware of (or can’t quite grasp the significance of) is Orban’s Golden Visa program.

    Let me enlighten you.

Through this system more than 19,000 people, including Syrians and many other people from other “muslim” countries have been encouraged by the “anti-immigrant” Orban to buy residency in Hungary. Very little security checks have been carried out- think of the terrorist potential there. Terrorists do not have to be poor.

And just think of all that possible dilution of “native culture”
Does this not bother you guys?

  6. Hungary is a sovereign nation therefore need not accept any foreigners. If the rest of the EU wants them, it is up to their government. The number of illegals may be down but the problems arose from the first wave still plague German, Sweden and many other countries.

    • Which illegals, do you mean unworthy life?

      • Don, not everyone who opposes mass immigration from outside the EU is a racist, as inferred by your comment. Surely you can’t beleive this? The EU/ Schengen open borders agreement was difficult enough to cobble together, not to mention opening it up externally as well, if only in practice. There are a multitude of valid reasons to oppose mass immigration. The point being that any undertaking of this magnitude needs to be decided directly by citizens. And re: your comment about the ‘small Hungarian fence ending in nowhere’ – any length of fence is better than none because it reduces the workload on the border police re: the distance they need to patrol. We get it, we don’t expect our barrier to be nearly 100% effective like Israel’s concrete wall. And btw, I’m not pleased by the visa-for-sale program, nor am I a blind cheerleader for Orban. I personally would welcome a real alternative to Fidesz. A good start would be for the opposition to also adopt a credible anti mass immigration program, something citizens clearly want. Add to that a robust, viable family support program and Hungary would have a much healthier political climate.

        • Does Freud tell you something Martin? If you do not even want to or can not call the exact status of a person. Homophobic is your attitude in any case, mostly those who think they are not like that.

Now you can be against immigration as you, please also call the Hungarian migrants in Europe and do not point with one finger to something you do yourself.

Now you can be against immigration as you like, but if we build all the walls because the mind has failed, that puts too much pressure on Europe. Whether triggered by wars or by the climate change the People will come.

If you are so inhospitable not to see what comes in the future, then you have to build a fence that does not help. Again, you have joy in Freud.

          • Don, I am really not sure what you’re trying to say here. Are you now insinuating that I’m a homosexual? Good for you, at least you got something right- I’ve been with my partner for 9 years now, just had our anniversary last month. Well educated as well with a fairly high profile company. And I’ve friends and family across a pretty wide political spectrum. Whether I personally like certain cultures better than others (yes I definitely have my preferences) is not important, policy needs to be decided by all of society. Immigration is a law and order issue. Don’t go projecting your own tired old prejudices on others.

          • “… mostly those who think they are not like that. …”

          • Jewish law look like a law and order issue … but it is only hate …

    Joe,

“A huge difference compared with what is going on in most of Western Europe.”

Indeed. I doubt this Syrian gentlemen would have found it so easy to pop into most of the EU.
What was your opinion of this scheme?
    Were the security checks enough?

    • How many ISIS, Al-Qaeda members and sympathizers do you think the EU got with that wave of migrants? That guy may be an SOB, but I doubt he will go kaboom, or become a sidewalk “truck driver”, or an amateur street “gynecologist”, or a Jew brasher or killer as is sometimes the case (See France), or a gay basher. So less harm to Hungarian society by having that guy than many of the “refugees” that Western Europe took in. And please do not bother with “can’t assume they are all like that”, because if only 10% of those who arrived in past few years exhibit any of those above mentioned traits, European society has a real problem on its hands, for a long time to come.

And the trend I was referencing in regards to Western Europe is actually in regards to the systematic replacement of the shrinking native population with a growing population of colonists. The ultimate tragedy in that regard is called extinction.

      • “How many ISIS, Al-Qaeda members and sympathizers do you think the EU got with that wave of migrants?” Echobox makes echoing echo …

… if I say one then you say liar, if I say two than you say, You see I am right. Is retorisch an oil lamp, like sympathizers, sympathizers and sympathizers …

… sounds like the run on a concrete wall on which a bomb belt is sprayed and you want to run full against it to prove that you are right. Imagine they are all like me. OK lets go on, wait I have to tell the readers Joe is the horror horror horror …

“That guy may be an SOB, but I doubt he will go kaboom, or become a sidewalk “truck driver”, or an amateur street “gynecologist”, or a Jew brasher or killer as is sometimes the case (See France), or a gay basher.”

… I warned you horror horror horror may be Hungary is getting an Terrorist so you can´t belive a Hungarian any more. Orban is a litel bit Terrorist so so so …

“So less harm to Hungarian society by having that guy than many of the “refugees” that Western Europe took in.”

        … echo …

“And please do not bother with “can’t assume they are all like that”, because if only 10% of those who arrived in past few years exhibit any of those above mentioned traits, European society has a real problem on its hands, for a long time to come.”

It is not one and not two it is Millions of Terrorist no wounder no no no … and if Joe writes traits than he mean his thinking and this is failing failing failing.

“And the trend I was referencing in regards to Western Europe is actually in regards to the systematic replacement of the shrinking native population with a growing population of colonists.”

Fuck echo … I thought the millions of terrorists are the problem now it’s the colonyists traits … and Jews are always there too, echoing echoing echoing.

“The ultimate tragedy in that regard is called extinction.”

Now you have the shit I warned you horror horror horror echoing echoing echoing.

So it was a good idea taking him in? The Visa Program was fine until the Sorosites started shining a light on it

Can you not see the hypocrisy of an allegedly immigrant-bashing government then letting other highly suspect immigrants in just because they put some money in well-connected back pockets?

You (by “you” I mean Orban or the typical Fidesz voter here) either hate Muslims or you don’t; you can’t just say the good ones are the ones with the money.

    • StrandedinSopron, if you go out of yourself I take your hat off to but anyone can say “the Trump” does it too. Money is good, no money not.
