Letter from Rev. Viktor J. Tóth, Pastor at the Hungarian Reformed Church of San Francisco and Vicinity

Mr. Lazar,

The Hungarian Reformed Church of San Francisco and Vicinity is a religious organization and therefore does not get involved in political matters. We worship God. At the same time, we are Hungarians. The parishioners of our Church are free to express their political viewpoints as private citizens, but they are not representing HRCSF. Due to privacy concerns, we do not comment on current and/or former membership.

Everyone is welcome,  we are open to all who seek God’s words and want to pursue their religion. Politics stay at the door.

There will be no further comments forthcoming.

Rev. Viktor Toth

Dear Rev. Tóth,

It is good to hear that you intend to leave politics “at the door.” For decades the Hungarian Reformed Church of San Francisco and Vicinity avoided politics but just in the last three years you gave podium to a series of political stump speeches.  Hungarian government politicians, among them, Consul General Tamás Széles, Consul András Doncsev and even Hungary’s President János Áder pushed Budapest’s political agenda at your church.  At the same time, I noticed that you never invite our own American politicians.

As you know, churches in the United States are legally prohibited from supporting a specific political agenda.

Good luck to your new assignment.

Sincerely,

György Lázár

(Rev. Viktor J. Tóth is the new pastor at The Hungarian Reformed Church of San Francisco and Vicinity)
