Hungary’s government says: Eat more pork, it’s good for you!

The American Institute of Cancer Research suggests we limit the consumption of red meats and avoid processed meats.

“In order to reduce cancer risk, eat no more than 18 ounces (cooked weight) per week of red meats, like beef, pork and lamb, and avoid ham, bacon, salami, hot dogs and sausages. Red meat includes hamburgers, steak, pork chops and roast lamb. Processed meat refers to meats preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or by the addition of preservatives and include ham, bacon, pastrami and salami, as well as hot dogs and sausages.”

Hungarian government officials see it differently. Sándor Fazekas, Minister of Agriculture, said that the WHO (World Health Organization) report warning about the cancer risks associated with the consumption of processed and red meats is “unscientific.” Mrs. László Menczel, a lobbyist for the Hungarian meat industry, agrees with him. Her goal is to increase meat consumption in Hungary. Mrs. Menczel says that the “modern man” eats more red and processed meat. (Read more here in Hungarian.)

Cancer researchers in the West particularly warn that read meat consumption may cause colorectal cancer. Not surprisingly, Hungary has one of the highest occurrence of colorectal cancer in the world and holds the world record in the number of deaths caused by this type of cancer!

Leaders of Hungary’s ruling party (Fidesz) are all involved in agriculture, many of them are pig farmers. OTP Bank billionaire Sándor Csányi, Hungary’s richest man and a close friend of PM Viktor Orbán, received a Ft 1.5 billion (USD 6.6 million) government grant to build a huge slaughterhouse for pigs in Mohács. It is suspected that Mr. Orbán himself owns a brand new pig farm via his favorite front man, Mr. Lőrinc Mészáros. (About Mr. Mészáros pig farm in English…)

It is patriotic to eat more pig meat in Hungary! Only the enemies of the country bring up the cancer concern which kills thousands of Hungarians every year. Literally!

  1. Point taken, but

    For the four million Hungarians on subsistence level the issue is not healthy food, but any food at all. Ripped by 27% VAT, they can afford only the cheapest food or meat, if any. Potatoes with is staple (think Ireland 1930s).
    Similarly, another 3 – 3.5 million watch every penny.

    The pork advertising also adds insult to injury since there is no point in advertising basic foodstuff to the needy. But this way the regime’s hangers-on will rake in a couple of billions more.

    • Sadly lots of people assume Harvard’s warnings must be valid. Red meat, bacon and other tasty high-fat foods, after all, have long enjoyed reputations as being both delicious and dangerous.

      Indeed, the bacon question has been argued for years, now with most non-vegan internet bloggers concluding that bacon’s “not so bad” if used to add a bit of flavor and crunchiness to “healthy” foods such as salads and vegetables. Comedian Jim Gaffigan spoofed this on Late Night with Conan O’Brien when he described bits of bacon as “the fairy dust of the foodcommunity” and eating a salad sprinkled with bacon as “panning for gold.”

      A bit more bacon – even a few strips – sometimes even gets the Food-Police stamp of approval, provided it’s a special treat, of course, and not a daily indulgence. But such recommendations usually come complete with a warning to stick with lean bacon, and then cook it so it’s firm but not soft. While that last sounds a bit naughty, it’s actually anti-fat puritanism — the goal being to render the soft parts into fat that can be poured or patted off.

      But what if bacon is actually good for us? What if it actually supports good health and is not a mortal dietary sin after all? What if we can eat all we’d like? Naughty propositions to be sure, but ones the Naughty Nutritionist™ is prepared to argue. And that promise is not just a strip tease!

    Yes – there is ample warning about processed and red meat.

    And the evidence is there with Hungary’s cancer figures.

    And Hungary has one of the highest lung cancer rates because of the smoking in Hungary – caused, not least, by the black-market tobacco coming from Russia. (And the ludicrous ‘tobac’ shops!)

    You can go to an open-air market and be driven out by cigarette smoke! I know! I’ve been there!

    Even sitting in a restaurant with a courtyard where the next table will happily light up a fag while you’re eating! I know! It’s happened to me!

    And then there’s the culinary delights of the carcinogenic pickles – which come in all forms and varieties in Hungary – an amazing selection – which Hungarians serve instead of fresh green vegetables. I know! I’ve eaten at Hungarian tables!

    The World Health Organisation says beware of eating too many pickles! They too are carcinogenic.

    Fresh green vegetables served al dente are amusingly labelled ‘reform kitchen’ for some reason! I know! I’ve eaten them! But they are rarely served at a Hungarian dinner table.

    Yes Hungary – Cancary.

  4. What do we know about cancer? Not much, I am afraid, although, people have been dying from cancer for thousands of years. There are different type of cancers but we still don’t know what causes them exactly and how to cure them.
    People who don’t smoke but live in polluted cities have the same chance to get lung cancer. I have seen a few dead people’s lungs who were not smokers but lived in a big city. Those lungs were black like hell and some of them died from lung cancer. Some people die from polluted water too.
    How can anyone know red meat definitely causes cancer? My family eats pork with pork for decades but no one has ever died from cancer.
    Cancer has nothing to do with genetics (?) or artificial food (?) or chemicals (?), of course. Every day we can hear that this and that can cause cancer, don’t eat them. Next time I can hear, oh no, according to a new research this is not true…..bla-bla-bla-bla. How come, that non-smoker vegetarians die from cancer too?
    We have never heard about manipulated test results (?) and powerful lobby groups (?), of course. Political and economic interests? Oh, no!
    Pork meat suddenly became the target of the WHO. Why is that? Because Europeans prefer pork meat? Because Hungary exports pork meat, a lot? It has nothing to do with the migrants crisis (?) and the fact that Muslims don’t eat pork, of course. USA backed WHO doesn’t want to force 500 million Europeans to change their eating habit in order to satisfy Muslim invaders (?), of course. Why would they do that?

    The Hungarian Government tries to defend the Hungarian interest, the interest of Hungarian producers and consumers. It has reduced the VAT of several basic food products (5%). There isn’t any reliable scientific evidence based on a long term experiment which proves that red meat is harmful to health and can cause cancer. It has become ‘evident’ only since the Muslim economic migrant flood was directed toward Europe by the USA. Manipulation as usual!!!!!!

      What rubbish.

      There is plenty of evidence to show the increased risk of cancer in all spheres of human activity.

      Evidence-based studies have revealed many risk factors and it’s up to you how you act to reduce the risk.

      Of coarse traffic pollution causes cancer but so does traffic pollution AND eating processed and red meats.

      It’s your choice to reduce the risk.

      Your ludicrous conflating of Muslims and Pork doesn’t merit being dignified with a response – except it’s clear you are a racist.

      agree with most of your post. Although, I don’t really get the connection between Moslem immigrants in Europe and the suppression of pork meat business.

      BTW. Moslem eat human flesh, mostly Christians. The whole internet is loaded with this topic. Hopefully that doesn’t cause cancer. Poor guys wouldn’t be safe.

  5. Want cancer? Be a vegetarian eat fruits and vegetables treated with Monsanto toxic pesticides. Have a nice meal. 🙂
